Many students at Mudgeeraba Special School have complex medical needs, these are dealt with individually and with sensitivity by our caring and experienced staff which includes a highly experienced school nurse. Parents and carers are encouraged to discuss all student medical needs with the principal prior to enrolling your child (and as changing needs arise after enrolment) so that processes can be put in place prior to school entry.
Illness
If a student becomes ill at school, every effort will be made to contact a parent or carer to advise them. They will then be asked to make arrangements to collect their child.
In your child's best interests please ensure that the school is advised of any changes to phone details or emergency contacts.
Medication
Mudgeeraba Special School follows strict Education Queensland procedures for the administration of medication in school. Parents and carers are asked to ensure these requirements are followed so that medication can be given safely. The school must keep a record of any form of prescribed medication that is administered to students at school, or while students are involved in a school approved activity. In respect of this, the following points are made:
Medication will not be administered by school staff unless clear instructions are written on the medication container. These instructions must be written by the pharmacist at the medical practitioner's direction.
Non-prescribed oral medication such as analgesics - aspirin, Panadol, ear drops etc. will not be administered by teachers or other persons on the school staff unless the parental request to the Principal is accompanied by a written prescription from a medical practitioner.
Prescribed asthma medication may be carried on the child's person (when possible). This practice also requires a letter of authority from the parents. If your child suffers from asthma, please ensure that this information is recorded in school medical records.
Use the medication authority form to document any relevant medical advice in relation to your child. Hard copies are also available at the office.
If your child suffers from any medical condition which requires special treatment e.g. allergies etc. please inform the school of the nature of the condition and emergency treatment.
