Vocational education

Mudgeeraba Special School offers pre-vocational students a flexible work experience program that caters for individual needs at various stages of work readiness. Each placement is identified and driven from their Personal Future Action Plans.

There must be a balance between interest and sampling when it comes to placing students in a variety of work settings. At times different venues may be used as stepping stones to build upon the skills students require in order to improve the likelihood of success in their chosen field of work.

Each work experience placement is student focused and the level of support provided depends on student skills and knowledge, the work placement environment and supervisor. The work trainer’s role is to make students as independent as possible.

The program operates under the normal work experience arrangements where employers will sign the usual work experience agreement form.

It is the priority of the program that students work towards gaining industry related knowledge and necessary skills required in order to gain independent and supported employment. The supervisors aim will be to assist students in mastering each task to an acceptable standard.

It is essential that best-practice partnerships are established and maintained between schools and businesses to provide beneficial gains for all parties. Mudgeeraba Special School has followed the DET policy CRP-PR-003: Work Experience Placements and liaised with Greg Clarke and his school networks to formalise the process. We also acknowledge the dedication and hard work of Mudgeeraba Special School staff that have worked on formalising the process.

Outcomes and benefits of work experience

  1. Students build skills and knowledge that will help them shape their post school options.

  2. Increase chances of employability by enhancing work related job skills

  3. Effectively transition to post school effectively work and adult life.

  4. Personal and social development with the focus on enhancing self-esteem and promoting a positive self-concept

  5. Students exposed to a variety of work situations as identified in their Personal Future Action Plans.

  6. Students given opportunities to master skills and procedures within chosen industries

  7. Consolidate skills to increase accuracy and productivity.

  8. Data collected and analysed around tasks completed, productivity and independence.

Selection criteria

  • Student has reached the age of fourteen and half years old.
  • Student demonstrates suitability for the program.
  • Student is willing to participate in the program.
  • Student has participated in on campus work experience programs and has demonstrated skills and knowledge they can transfer into the work place.
  • Student demonstrates knowledge of work place health and safety.

Assessment and data collection

Students, staff and employees are required to collect data on the skills and knowledge they have attained during each work experience. The reports are completed and handed back to the work place co-ordinator who will then collate data and disseminate to each stakeholder. The data will be used in many ways including:

  • During Personal Future Action Plans to inform stakeholders of developments
  • To decide on future work experience opportunities
  • To develop individual programs that will increase students’ knowledge and skills so they can master certain skills and procedures.
  • To report student achievements during their senior schooling.

Assessment for Mudgeeraba Special School will include the following:

  • Pre-work experience – work place health and safety (workplace and travel) and work skills identified and taught.
  • Log book - which will identify student’s ability to complete these tasks outlined.
  • Post work experience – employers, work trainer, students and parents assess the skills and knowledge acquired over each work placement.
  • Having students demonstrate a task they have completed and rate their performance.
